Today we went to the park. The weather was nice and warm with a slight breeze. We set up a blanket underneath a tree and played with toys and read a few books. I took lots of pictures but only a couple turned out cute. Kegan loves the outside. He would stare up at the tree while the leaves were quaking and smile. He is beginning to grab for his toes and laugh a lot more these days. I can not believe he is almost four months old! We hope everyone has a great turkey day.

The Camping Trip That Did Not Happen
So over Veteran's Day weekend we decided to take Kegan out to the desert for some camping and hiking. We drove over to Anza Borrego Springs State Park in the afternoon and set up camp. The drive was beautiful. There is a lot of interesting vegetation out there and we could not wait to explore it. After we set up the tent we went for a small walk around the area (it was a little late to go for a long hike) and saw some cool plants and animal prints. The sunset looked like it was going to be amazing. When we got bakc to camp the wind had picked up a little so we bundled up. I actually ended up with four layers on by the end of our adventure. Kegan was a little trooper. He got a little fussy so we fed him and he took a short snooze. In the meantime, we decided to get things ready for dinner. Adrian had packed a bottle of wine to celebrate our first camping trip with the baby, but we forgot cups. Oh well not a big deal. (At this point the wind was a little stronger and the temps were dropping!) We started to pull out things for dinner but forgot to pack the can opener. That's okay we can have plain pasta. Started to heat the water, stove quit working! Have I mentioned yet how cold it was getting. We ate a granola bar and crawled into the tent. Kegan woke up and had a diaper explosion and was fussy. He was not cold but he did not want to stay in the tent. Then I began to worry that he would get cold while he was sleeping. He could not sleep between us because our tent was too small and I was afraid I had not packed enough warm blankets for him. Adrian got out of the tent to dispose of the dirty diaper and noticed everything outside was wet. The humidity had gone up! I decided that it was time to go (The boys were good-but I could not get warm and stop worrying about the baby). Adrian packed us up and we headed back home. The temp. meter in the car read 46 degrees. Burrr!! Even though we did not camp it was still a great adventure and we learned about some things that we would do differently next time. One thing with the Armold family is that it is always an adventure!

Kegan's First Halloween
Hello Everyone-life has been very busy lately which has left me little time to blog. Kegan had his first Halloween and he was dressed as a little pumpkin. I took him trick or treating with my sister and nephew. Of course he stayed in the jogger and looked around with amazement at all of the little ones and their costumes. He is three months now and growing like a weed. He found his voice at two and half months and enjoys singing to himself in the morning. The other evening he rolled over onto his back and laughed at himself. It was very cute. We feel very blessed to have such a good natured baby. He sleeps through the night (8-11 hours) and naps a little during the day. He loves being awake and playing with mommy during the day. We hope all is well and wish everyone a happy turkey day!

My first football game with Dad
Just an update!

So now Kegan is just over 1 month old and we are having a blast with him. We are still getting plenty of sleep in the evening, anywhere from 5-7 hours straight! He has hit many milestones: he smiles throughout the day (and no it is not just gas), holds his head up and looking from side to side for a few minutes at a time, soft coo sounds, sucking on his fists for soothing, tracks with his eyes from side to side, turns his head at sounds, wildly kicks his legs and waves his arms, and he his growing longer everyday it seems. At his two week wellness appointment he wieghed 9 lbs and 6.6 ounces and grew to 21 inches. Since then I am sure he has gained 2 lbs and grew another inche or so. We love being parents, they say you never really know love until you see yur child for the first time! After Kegan was born we had many visitors come to help out. The first was my mother, Carolyn, although she had to leave shortly after he was born (the little booger was a week late). And then came my other set of parents, Rick and Robbie. They had a great time getting to know Kegan and helping us out. After them, came Adrians folks, Mel and Anita. They also enjoyed seeing their first grandchild! We really apprectiated all the help, support, and love we got from all the grandparents. Thank you grandmas and grandpas, you are the best!

The Moby Wrap!

Today was Kegan's first full day at home. After some breakfast, we decided to go for a walk and to try out the Moby Wrap baby carrier that Jung and David Crabbe gave us (thanks!)... Here's a couple of pics...It's kind of silly looking, but it is very comfortable and does a great job of holding and supporting the baby while leaving your hands free to do whatever...Kegan seemed to like it just fine...we walked for about 20 minutes without a single fuss...it was a little hot, but my sun-hat shaded him pretty well (though not in this pic)...
Right now, Kegan's taking a nap on Tracey's lap, and I couldn't resist a picture...here you are...

Kegan is here!

It took some doing, but Kegan is finally here. Tracey had quite the ordeal in her labor, and I'm sure she'll post about it soon. When it was all said and done, though, Kegan was born on Sunday 27 July, 2008 at 6:46 p.m. He weighed 9 lbs 5.4 oz and was 19.75 inches long.
We all spent three days and three nights at the hospital, getting released today at 2:30 pm. Kegan and mom are doing great and recovering nicely. Kegan is pretty amazing for a guy that just eats, sleeps, and cries :). We are all happy to be home and we'll be sure to post more photos as Kegan gets settled in.

I never wore the uniform, no medals on my chest. The band, it doesn't play for me, I am not among “the Best.” I do not march in cadence; I do not rate salute, I stand among the silent ranks, our devotion absolute. If you've not worn my shoes, you do not know my story. I live a life of sacrifice, my reward a private glory. I've wept many silent nights away, and I've kept the home fires burning. I've worried and I've waited, as world events were churning. I've moved more times than you could fathom, left more people than you've known. I've planted gardens 'round the world, very few that I've seen grown. I've grieved with new-made widows, and had my share of scares -- when a ship or plane or man was down, and all I had were prayers. I'm not asking for your sympathy, (although appreciation can be nice) I did it quite on purpose --I chose to sacrifice. I'll tell you a secret now, one you'd never guess. About the one glory that is mine, it's just enough -- no more, no less. When you and I stand together as our national anthem plays, I'll fill with reminiscences of how I spent those days. I'll know the pain and joys again, I'll know that freedom isn't free, I'll know I've helped to pay the price –and that the anthem plays for me.Elizabeth Soutter Schwarzer

Hello everyone! We are getting to be very excited around here. A little over three weeks and counting! Adrian has been doing most of the blogging so I thought I would try one out today and let everyone know how I have been feeling. For the most part I have had a trouble free pregnancy. When I say trouble free and do not mean that I have not had any issues but nothing alarming. Adrian has lucked out- I have yet to send him on some crazy food run in the middle of night or make him rub my back and feet for endless hours. I do have him give me head rubs but I did that before I was pregnant so I do not think it should count as some odd request by a hormonal pregnant wife! I have not craved any weird food items but I have enjoyed certain things more than others. For instance I love chicken salad sandwiches and mangoes with strawberries. My sweet tooth kicked in two weeks before my gestational diabetes test (go figure) and it was a bit frustrating trying to stay away from items that could affect the results. Overall I have been feeling really good. I have yet to hit that stage where I just want the baby to born all ready. I get a little more tired in the evenings and have awful heartburn no matter what I eat, but I really can not complain. We will keep everyone posted on Kegan's arrival and look forward to sharing photo's and memories with you all! Take care!

Let's talk about BPA.
Ok...so I've spent the better part an afternoon last weekend learning everything there is to learn from the internet about polycarbonate plastic water bottles and the threat they pose to our health.
I was tipped off on this whole thing by Tracey, as she had heard that certain baby bottles should be avoided due to potential BPA exposure.
BPA is short for Bisphenol-A. It is a plasticizer used in hard polycarbonate bottles. Apparently, it is good at plasticizing polycarbonate, but it leaches out, particularly into hot liquids (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080130092108.htm).
BPA is an estrogenic substance that has been shown to cause excessive reproductive organ growth in female mice and other hormonal problems in male mice. There is recent evidence that BPA exposure during pregnancy and infancy may increase obesity risk. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080130092108.htm
Of course nothing goes down without a fight, and there are a number of studies that indicate that BPA is harmless. Here's an interesting article that discusses a strong correlation of the results of BPA research and the funding source. http://www.physorg.com/news96037050.html
Government sponsored studies say this stuff is bad, even at the leaching level that occurs at room temperature. Plastic industry sponsored studies say that everything is cool. Ambiguous research doesn't really surprise me, but corporate obfuscation of revenue reducing scientific data surprises me even less.
So of course I started reading up on all this stuff the day we bought two nice new polycarbonate water bottles and a dispenser. We had crunched some numbers and figured that we would save money over buying 1/2 liter bottles by the case and case. So today's afternoon was spent finding alternatives.
There's polyvinylchloride (PVC) bottles, but that stuff has an even longer history of exposing people to harmful chemicals...so that's a no. There's high density polyethylene bottles (HDPE), and these are cool (or at least I hope so) because this is what milk cartons are made from. There aren't many large bottles made from this stuff though, and I don't think it is intended for long term use.
The best stuff is polyethylene terephthalate, this is what soda other liquids are packaged in today, but they only recently started using this plastic for refillable water bottles. (http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/login.jsp?url=/iel5/11040/34835/01663843.pdf?tp=&isnumber=&arnumber=1663843)
One would think that, with the emergence of the BPA scare, (baby bottle manufacturers and other companies like Nalgene are pulling their BPA-containing products) that finding alternative bottles would be easy. Nope. I found all of two companies that make them. One of them makes bottles for bottled water companies (like Sparklets), but they aren't available for retail. In fact, for a long time, this was all I could find for PET water bottles. But as it has for many centuries and in countless situations there was a saving grace to be found in BEER!
It turns out that a company makes PET bottles to be used for homebrewing beer. These are an alternative to the heavy glass carboy bottles used in fermenting homebrew. Apparently, PET is inert enough and O2 impermeable enough to be used as an alternative to glass for fermenting beer and wine. We had a winner. And winners don't come cheap. A water bottle goes for about 10 bucks, but a beer bottle has to be worth at least twice that. We bought 3. They are called Better Bottle, and as far as I can tell are only available through home brewing and home winemaking retail stores. They come in 3,5,and 6 gallon sizes.
So after too many hours of computer time, and spending enough money to buy cases of water bottles for at least a year, we are now BPA free with our home water dispenser.
I guess we'll take comfort in the reduced waste, cause this cheaper water thing just cost us a bit of money.

Hello World!!
That's a little computer science humor for y'all. Speaking of hello's, the impetus behind this blog is the imminent arrival of Tracey and I's first child Kegan Grant Armold. We thought that a family blog would be a good way to stay in touch with family and friends and allow them to see what's happening in the little guys life.
We've never made a blog before, but we are hoping this little experiment works out. Adrian's hoping to find some widgets to add to this bad boy. Hopefully we can add a web cam...some photo albums, maybe find some other nifty goodies.
Anyhow, in keeping with the spirit of the blog, Tracey's doctor's appointment today went well. Kegan's heartrate is a healthy 140. He's also head down already, so things are tracking just so. We got to feel his head (I call it his grape, because I'm a jarhead) so that was cool.
Anyhow...thanks for coming by. More to follow.
Goodbye World.
